Let Go, Girl With Green Balloons

Girl With Green Balloons
Girl With Green Balloons

From an original oil painting of a girl clutching the string of a brown balloon in her hand as a number of green balloons float away around her. Why doesn't she let go of that last balloon?

A young lady in a green dress and brown boots, she stands alone in a rather forlorn manner, her eyes are downcast and her hands clasped together to give the impression of someone in a sad or thoughtful mood. It makes for a rather poignant scene, illustrative perhaps of a person clinging to a loved one who is being sent away.

She can't seem to say goodbye, we all know that parting can be hard, how difficult it can be to leave someone or something we're very attached to. Standing on a train platform waving bye to a friend or watching them depart to board a plane, it can be so sad, so painful. Nobody wants to feel isolated or abandoned. But to be alone is not to be lonely or lonesome, sometimes you need to be alone to be yourself.

As well as being a metaphor for a sad parting you could also view this woman and her balloons as symbolising the inspirational and thought provoking words of Lao Tzu:

"When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be".

It's wonderful to be able to read the words of wise people from previous eras and learn from their views of our world. This motivating quote by the ancient Chinese philosopher is no exception.

Sometimes a fear of change or the new and unknown can prevent us from making the changes we need to take our lives to a higher level. We become far too comfortable with our current situation and prefer to play it safe – better the devil you know – when taking an alternative route could be the key to greater things.

This original piece of figurative art with its striking surface texture and limited palette is a rather expressive and poetic way of communicating both a departing and a reluctance to experience change. Its touching depiction of that lone balloon waiting to be released to join the other balloons floating and moving away completes this symbolic and motivational message.

Don't cling to things that hold you back. Release it, let that balloon float free with the others. Let Go!
