Orbit in an orbit

Orbit in an orbit

Acrylic on Canvas
A4 (8 * 11.5 inches)

I haven’t done Illustration Friday for quite a while.  The word this week is Orbit.  The orbit is the cavity in the skull in which the eye sits.   So what I’ve painted is a couple of eyeballs orbiting around (each other) within an orbit.

And why would they be eyeballing each other so aggressively?  Perhaps it reflects anger and frustration at our inability to look after our environment.  Their orbital path mirroring that of all the space junk floating around the planet which made the news last week.  And perhaps the skull reflects the fate of mankind if we continue in this irresponsible way.

The palette used is yellow ochre, raw umber, burnt umber, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, white and a touch of red.

IF Topic: Sweet

Bee on Honeycomb

7*5 inches; Acrylic on Watercolour Paper

The fruit of bees is desired by all, and is equally sweet to kings and beggars  – Saint Ambrose

Going back quite a few years, there was a documentary on the Baka Pygmies of Cameroon.  One of my favourite scenes was when a group of them went deep into the forest looking for honey.  And when they found some, wow, it looked so delicious – they ate it all, the honey, the honeycomb and the odd bee!

I quite like the effect of the hexagonal comb cells in this sketch, I think I might use it for a larger painting.

IF Topic: Liquid

The British Museum is running an exhibition on Pompeii – Life and death Pompeii and Herculaneum.  The exhibition is on until September and I will definitely be visiting.  Perhaps that’s why my mind immediately went to molten lava when I saw last Friday’s IF topic.  I had a bit of fun:

Awareness Ignited

8 * 10 inches; Acrylic on Acrylic Paper

Of course, as we all know, it wasn’t slow moving lava that got them in Pompeii but the rather scarier and speedier pyroclastic flow (but I guess such subtleties are of no consequence if you’re a statue with a top speed of about 0mph!).

Illustration Friday

Illustration Friday is a weekly art task that anyone can join in. A topic is chosen each Friday and anyone who’s interested draws or paints their interpretation of it.  I really enjoy looking at other people’s styles and take on a topic.

I’ve been too busy with this website (and something else which I’ll tell you about later) to do the most recent IF but may find the time to do a quick sketch for this week’s.

Here are a few submissions I made not too long ago, they’re all acrylic on 6*4 inch card.
