Orbit in an orbit

Orbit in an orbit

Acrylic on Canvas
A4 (8 * 11.5 inches)

I haven’t done Illustration Friday for quite a while.  The word this week is Orbit.  The orbit is the cavity in the skull in which the eye sits.   So what I’ve painted is a couple of eyeballs orbiting around (each other) within an orbit.

And why would they be eyeballing each other so aggressively?  Perhaps it reflects anger and frustration at our inability to look after our environment.  Their orbital path mirroring that of all the space junk floating around the planet which made the news last week.  And perhaps the skull reflects the fate of mankind if we continue in this irresponsible way.

The palette used is yellow ochre, raw umber, burnt umber, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, white and a touch of red.

Ten Pin Bowling Shoes on Linen

Ten Pin Bowling Shoes

Acrylic on Canvas
6 * 4 inches

I didn’t know you could get specialist shoes for ten pin bowling.  I suppose I’ve never had reason to think about it, I’ve only ever been bowling twice.  Apparently you need these shoes to have consistent control over your sliding.

This painting has been done on medium weave primed linen.  I divided that roll I bought the other day into two.  One have has given me four 8 * 10 inch pieces and three smaller scraps.  I used one of the scrap pieces for this painting.

Colours are: pthalo blue & white for the background; alizarin crimson and a touch of napthol red light for the main part of the shoe; ultramarine blue and burnt sienna for various darks.

Blue Flowers

I got two little cuts of universal primed fine weave linen to try out.  Very nice to paint on.

I also bought a half meter of primed medium weave linen which I’m yet to try.  Hopefully I’ll enjoy painting on that just as much since it’s cheaper.

Merry Christmas everybody and have a wonderful New Year!

This piece was painted as part of the WetCanvas acrylics forum ‘Different Strokes’ monthly task.  We were asked to paint something related to Christmas.

Rose on Lana Vanguard (Yupo)

Acrylic on Yupo Paper
10 * 14 inches

I’m trying out Lana Vanguard Polypropylene paper, it’s made in France and similar to Yupo paper (which we can’t seem to get here).

It is smooth, smooth, smooth!  The paper is non-absorbent so colour sits on top of the paper and takes longer to dry than with other surfaces.  I thought this would make it great for blending but the paint just slides all over the place.

Having said that I like this painting of a rose (I started with an acrylic gouache black/white underpainting) and look forward to more experiments with Lana Vanguard paper.

Ampersand – Gesso Bord

Acrylic on Gesso bord 5 * 7 inches

Acrylic on Gesso bord
5 * 7 inches

This was the surface I thought I’d like the most and I saved it until last.

It didn’t feel too different from the Aquabord although it has an acrylic gesso ground rather than the aquabord’s clay surface.  I enjoyed this surface more than the finished painting would suggest (I struggled with those yellows!).

In conclusion, my favourite Ampersand surface is definitely the aquabord.  I will be buying a few more of the aquabord, gessobord and perhaps the scratchbord as I like that smooth India ink background.  I would also buy the canvas texture artists panel if it came in the flat profile.
